[HowTo] fix garbled screen after Ubuntu upgrade

Today, I have upgraded my Ubuntu Mate 16.10 VM to 17.10 and upon restarting, I ended up seeing a garbled screen like below with all the open windows that don’t refresh (painting of the windows doesn’t seem to happen)

It turned out that the issue was with the resolution and I had to somehow open the display preferences (System -> Preferences -> Hardware -> Display) window and change the resolution to something lower than the default that I had set earlier.

Voila! I can now see it all rendering fine.
